Dhumra Farm Resort

Punakha

Surrounded by acres of organic garden on a hillside overlooking the sweeping Punakha valley, the Dhumra Farm Resort offers one of the finest settings of any hotel in Bhutan (and that's saying something!). The view of the dzong and the surrounding landscape is exceptional, and the property is a much-loved favourite of the Selective Asia team.

With just a handful of rooms, the experience feels personal and relaxed, with minimalistic style and high levels of comfort and service. Spread over the original, traditional-style house, and a second, newer building, all the rooms are generously-sized with cosy, simple furnishings, ideal for cosy couples retreats or intrepid family getaways. Wood-lined walls, traditional detailing and natural light invite you to unwind after a day exploring the surrounding trails. The intimate, homely dining room is nice enough if the conditions keep you indoors, but we'd recommend heading out to the terrace whenever you can to enjoy those fantastic views across the valley whilst you dine.

Location

In a sheltered location on a hillside overlooking Punakha Dzong and the misty valley below.

Exploring the hills around Punakha and returning to such well-appointed comfort really made our trip. Breakfasting on the terrace with those views was a wonderful bonus.

Why we love it

Discover what to expect from staying at Dhumra Farm Resort

Location, location, location…

It’s easy to run out of superlatives when describing Bhutan’s landscapes, as every horizon heralds a new, breathtaking silhouette to absorb. Finding the right place to pause and truly immerse yourself in those singular views is a key part of the experience. At Dhumra Farm Resort, the prime location is front and centre. Head out on botanically-focused hikes through the nearby forest, venture further afield by bike, try your hand at picking the produce which the resort serves in its farm-to-table meals. Return to relax on the terrace, gazing towards that unbelievably beautiful mountainous horizon.

Comfort amid the clouds

The concept of luxury can encompass so much more than high-end service and lavish interiors. For us, it’s also about having access to rare experiences and unusual locations which are often beyond reach. Dhumra can safely say it offers luxury in all categories, but it’s the combination of its remarkable position and surroundings, with a level of comfort which allows guests to fully unwind and feel refreshed, which is so special. The rooms are personal idylls where you can relax and recharge at the end of each day in cosy privacy, and there are hidden nooks and inviting seating areas around the resort where you can steal a few moments to soak up the view. As a bonus, the farm-to-table cuisine is excellent.

What can you do there?

Wake early for a fresh fruit breakfast on the terrace as the sun rises higher and the morning mist begins to clear. Explore the resort’s organic farm garden, perhaps pitching in with picking the fruit and vegetables, or finding a quiet corner for contemplation. Venture out on gentle walks and bike rides, head further with bespoke guided hikes, and visit Punakha Dzong and the nearby villages. Return to the resort to soak tired muscles in a hot stone bath, refuel with a delicious, locally-sourced meal, and bookend the mountain-gazing on the terrace as the sun sets.

Farm-to-table Philosophy

The resort grows many varieties of seasonal fruits and vegetables in its organic garden which are used to create and inform each day’s menu, keeping produce as local as possible.
