Staying at the Sofitel Metropole is like attending the most enjoyable and immersive history lesson. Opened in 1901, and once host to a roll-call of iconic 20th-century guests, the Metropole Hanoi exudes historic charm like no other property in the city, and remains one of Vietnam's most sought-after hotels.
The hotel is divided into two individually designed wings. The Opera Wing being the more neoclassical and The Metropole Wing exhibiting a very French-colonial finish. We love strolling through the corridors, perusing the heritage on display and appreciating the overwhelming sense of grandeur. With the chance for guests to take a tour of the rather chilling historic war bunker too, the Metropole is far more than just an average hotel...
Just a stone’s throw from the splendid Opera House, the Metropole lands you right in the middle of Hanoi’s charming French quarter, just away from the banks of Hoan Kiem Lake.

On arrival, it was like taking a step back in time. The hotel radiates character, history and romance.
Discover what to expect from staying at Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi
From history and character to romance and pizzazz, The Sofitel has it covered. Picture this: a morning meandering through the cobbled streets of the Old Quarter, followed by a leisurely afternoon indulging in showstopping cakes and scones. We love being spoilt with a delectable chocolate buffet before enjoying an evening of live jazz over dinner, or opting for a private dining setting.
Sip Perrier while people-watching at La Terrasse - a time-wasters dream. You might catch a glimpse of the Vietnamese president, famous authors or other notable characters who have been known to come for coffee from time to time.
For us, it’s all about the Opera Wing, sometimes known as the ‘Old Wing’. It exhibits beautiful architecture, history and luxury, yet remains comfy and welcoming. Staying in this particular wing might cost that little bit extra, but we think it’s worth it.
The Sofitel makes no claim to be anything but grand and indulgent. If you're looking to mark a special occasion, and are happy to stretch the purse strings, we can safely say there’s no better place to stay in Hanoi. Romance radiates from its walls, and you can make memories to last a lifetime.
