The dry season continues during the month of January, promising premium travelling conditions throughout Laos. Comfortable average temperatures, plenty of sunshine, and minimal rainfall can be expected across the country.
Average temperatures during January are a comfortable 24°C in Vientiane and Luang Prabang, whilst in Pakse and the southern regions it’s slightly warmer and highs of 30°C are not uncommon at this time.
If you plan to travel to the higher altitude regions in the north and east of the country, or are taking a Mekong River cruise via Pakbeng, cooler temperatures (avg temp: 15°C) should be expected, especially at night when it can get very cold and warm clothing is essential. In Phongsali, for example, temperatures can dip to as low as 5°C.
Essentially, sunny dry days and low rainfall make January an excellent time of year to visit Laos.
